10 Gonzo Machines From Rogue Inventor Buckminster Fuller

10 Gonzo Machines From Rogue Inventor Buckminster Fuller
The late, great architect and inventor brought us the geodesic dome, but Buckminster Fuller’s often twisted, often brilliant vision extended far beyond air-conditioned sporting arenas. From super-efficient cars carrying lots of passengers to entire cities encapsulated by single roofs, he made Frank Lloyd Wright look positively normal, and his prescient engineering foreshadowed—and continues to inform—the movement toward green design and prefabricated housing. Here’s a handful of our favorite concepts from the Fuller retrospective at the Whitney Museum in New York.

"If Canada's presence in the world were to be judged by a single criterion, [it should be] Canada's humanism, its pursuit of social justice..."

The insulting slang “kiss my ass” dates back at least to 1705
The science of kissing is called philematology.
Lips are 100 times more sensitive than the tips of the fingers. Not even genitals have as much sensitivity as lips
Approximately two-thirds of people tip their head to the right when they kiss
Some scholars speculate this preference starts in the womb.

KISS (v.)
O.E. cyssan "to kiss," from P.Gmc. *kussijanan (cf. O.S. kussian, O.N. kyssa, O.Fris. kessa, Ger. küssen), from *kuss-, probably ultimately imitative of the sound. The O.E. noun was coss, which became M.E. cuss, but this yielded to kiss, from the verb. For vowel evolution, see bury. There appears to be no common I.E. root word for "kiss," though suggestions of a common ku- sound may be found in the Gmc. root and Gk. kynein "to kiss," Hittite kuwash-anzi "they kiss," Skt. cumbati "he kisses."
"Kissing, as an expression of affection or love, is unknown among many races, and in the history of mankind seems to be a late substitute for the more primitive rubbing of noses, sniffing, and licking." [Buck, p.1113]
Some languages make a distinction between the kiss of affection and that of erotic love (cf. L. saviari "erotic kiss," vs. osculum, lit. "little mouth"). Fr. embrasser "kiss," but lit. "embrace," came about in 17c. when the older word baiser (from L. basiare) acquired an obscene connotation. Kiss of death (1948) is in ref. to Judas' kiss in Gethsemane (Matt. xxvi.48-50). Slang kisser "mouth" is from 1860. Insulting invitation kiss my ass is at least from 1705, but probably much older (cf. "The Miller's Tale").

Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know that man is here for the sake of other men.

Brian Wilson's Lost Rap Song Uncovered! [Exclaim News]

Brian Wilson's Lost Rap Song Uncovered!
12/3/2007 By Cam Lindsay, Exclaim

Click here to listen to the track.

In 1989, Brian Wilson recorded an album called Sweet Insanity during a period where the Beach Boys star was reportedly "troubled." Rejected by Sire, the album, which also features Weird Al Yankovic and Bob Dylan, has seen life through bootlegs over the years, but now a precious gem called "Smart Girls," featuring a mash-up of Beach Boys classics, has surfaced through Jersey City, NJ-based radio station WFMU. Here's what you need to know:

"'Smart Girls' was produced by Matt Dike, the co-founder of Delicious Vinyl who was also part of the production team behind hits by Tone Loc and Young MC. By varying accounts Dike was at one time a member of the Dust Brothers and responsible for a some of the production on The Beastie Boy's Paul's Boutique which was recorded in 1989 (roughly the same time as Wilson's album). You can actually hear some vague links as 'Smart Girls' employs a similar cut-and-paste sample aesthetic (to far worse effect) as bits of past Beach Boy hits are chopped up and sprinkled throughout the song. 'Smart Girls' was supposedly released as a promo to radio stations and Wilson played the song on the air during an interview on Dr. Demento's show in 1992. The LA Weekly dug up this 'Brains and Genius' J-Card at a used record shop which may be the radio promo or something else entirely."

LEARNING: school of thought

School of thought

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search
A school of thought is a collection or group of people who share common characteristics of opinion or outlook of a philosophy, discipline, belief, social movement, cultural movement, or art movement. There have been several schools of economic thought throughout history.
Schools are often characterized by their currency, and thus classified into "new" and "old" schools. This dichotomy is often a component of paradigm shift. However, it is rarely the case that there are only two schools in any given field.
Schools are often named after their founders such as the "Rinzai school" of Zen named after Linji and the Asharite school of early Muslim philosophy named after Abu l'Hasan al-Ashari. They are often also named after their places of origin, such as the Ionian school of philosophy that originated in Ionia and the Chicago school of architecture that originated in Chicago, Illinois and the Prague School of linguistics, named after a linguistic circle found in Prague.

Music Learning. Round 2: What You're Doing (Beatles' SONG, 1964)

"What You're Doing"
  • is a song written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon/McCartney),  one of eight originals of fourteen songs on the 1964 album Beatles for Sale (see 1964 in music) by the group; it also appeared on the 1965 American release Beatles VI (see 1965 in music).
The overall effect is tense—a tightly arranged song performed very looselysuiting the lyrical matter of confronting a lover over a crumbling relationship.
  • The lyrics are generally believed to concern McCartney's relationship with Jane Asher.
  • [Mccartney vs. Lennon] Paul had typically been the more optimistic of the two when it came to songwriting.
Throughout the song, McCartney adds an interesting touch to the rhyme scheme by combining a single, two-syllable word with two one-syllable words
(i.e. "Look what you're doing, I'm feeling blue and runnin', and there's no fun in it...")
  • "What You're Doing" was recorded on 29 September, 30 September, and 26 October 1964
John Lennon – acoustic guitar, harmony vocal
Paul McCartney – bass, double-tracked lead vocal (!)
George Harrison – 12-string lead guitar, harmony vocal
Ringo Starr – drums
George Martin – piano

Music Learning. Round 1: 69 Love Songs (ALBUM)

69 Love Songs is a three-volume concept album
by The Magnetic Fields
released in 1999.
As its title indicates, the album is composed of 69 love songs
all written by Magnetic Fields frontman Stephin Merritt.

The album was originally conceived as a music revue. Stephin Merritt was sitting in a gay piano bar in Manhattan, listening to the pianist's interpretations of Stephen Sondheim songs, when he decided he ought to get into theatre music because he felt he had an aptitude for it. "I decided I'd write one hundred love songs as a way of introducing myself to the world. Then I realized how long that would be. So I settled on sixty-nine. I'd have a theatrical revue with four drag queens. And whoever the audience liked best at the end of the night would get paid.

The variety of 69 Love Songs also derives from the many song genres that Merritt raids and filters through his own sensibility. Merritt has said
"69 Love Songs is not remotely an album about love. It's an album about love songs, which are very far away from anything to do with love."

Other songs indirectly reference some of Merritt's favourite artists, including Fleetwood Mac[1] ("No One Will Ever Love You") , Cole Porter ("Zebra"), Orchestral Manoeuvres in the DarkThe Jesus and Mary Chain ("Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits"), ("When My Boy Walks Down the Street"), Billie Holiday ("My Only Friend"), and Irving Berlin ("A Pretty Girl is Like...").
*yay! learned something new. awesome something new learning. amazing, a happy-making fact learning at its best.
** i can't wait to re-listen to these tunes with the newfound understanding of the influences in mind

Another way of understanding 69 Love Songs is through Merritt's praise of an artist (Laurie Anderson) who "write[s] heartbreaking melodies with words that make fun of heartbreaking melodies."

Consider "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" where Stephin and Claudia, playing jilted lovers modelled closely on Sonny & Cher, sing their complaints to one another, overplaying and overstating their grievances such that their words become garish declarations of woe ("what a dark and dreary life / are you reaching for a knife?") to which the other character isn't really capable of responding but must still follow in tone ("yeah, oh yeah").

The lack of a firm distinction between content (what is sung) and form (the way it is sung) implies that this couple lives and dies by virtue of how persuasively they can sing to one another, and illustrates the persistent Magnetic Fields songwriting device of trapping a character within the conventions or formalities of a genre.

Q: why is stephin merritt AMAZING?
A: Below are the credits for the album(s)

(note the beautifully overwhelming size of the list indicating 'instruments played' by Merritt on the album. unreal.)
(the fact that a list is required is extraordinary to begin with)
Stephin Merritt vocals, Digitech vocalist, Roland harmonizer, vocoder, ukulele, baritone ukelele, Kaholas ukelele, Admira classical, acoustic-electric 12-string guitar, lap steel, fado guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, autoharp, Marxophone, ukelin, tremeloa, violin-uke, sitar, zither, violin, musical saw, keyboards, synclavier, Moog Satellite, piano, harmonium, Wurlitzerorgan, rhythm units, recorder, ocarina, pennywhistle, Maestro wind synthesizer, Hohner melodica, Paul Revere jug, rumba box, xylophone, kalimbas, Radio Shackdrum kit, cymbals, rain stick, chimera, maracas, conga, bongos, triangle, bells, tambourine, washboard, steel drum, Chicken Shakers, finger cymbals, springs and Slinkypipes, bamboo harp, spirit chaser, sleighbell, fingersnaps, thunder sheet,

I don't think I've ever seen, or ever will again see ONE person credited for playing that many instruments one one work.
oh wait! thats not true, re: Brian Wilson and Paul Mccartney. case & point. talented enough to join the

(i'm curious as to whether or not there are even any other instance documenting one person responsible for playing that sizable a number of instruments on ONE album (release).)

(there must be. yay!NEW INTERVESTIGATION!
If there are, I must find out what album, when, who, how, and how many.
Results of research to come
)

(i wonder if there is Guiness World Record for that. There must be. Also update to come.)

Rest assured, i will publish the 'k's-notes' for this article & subsequent wiki's (which in this case, i foresee MANY re: further reserach on my favourite albums covered in the series. I bet there are exerpts/hilites on wikimedia, or wikiquote. Oh shit/whoneeds sleep anyway? Intersomnia

3.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephin_Merritt
Merritt suffers from a hearing condition known as hyperacusis; any sound heard louder than normal begins to "feedback" in his left ear at increasingly louder volumes. This has largely influenced the reserved live setup of The Magnetic Fields, which usually consists of acoustic instruments and little to no percussion. Merritt also wears earplugs during performances, and typically covers his left ear if the audience applauds.
Heartbreaking. Stephin Merritt is one of the most heartbreaking victims. What an asshole (God?). Crime against humanity. meanwhile (i'm an asshole) there are more than enough musicians who make music thats could be considered a crime against humanity, whod be doing us a favour in losing their hearing/ability to make music.

New Links Between Lucid Dreaming And Psychosis Could Revive Dream Therapy In Psychiatry

▪ Similarities in brain activity during lucid dreaming and psychosis suggest that dream therapy may be useful in psychiatric treatment
▪ This is strengthened by the potential evolutionary relationship between dreams and psychosis
▪ Lucid dreaming creates distinct patterns of electrical activity in the brain that have similarities to the patterns made by psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia
⁃ offers potential for new therapeutic routes based on how healthy dreaming differs from the unstable states associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders.

"In the field of psychiatry, the interest in patients' dreams has progressively fallen out of both clinical practice and research. But this new work seems to show that we may be able to make comparisons between lucid dreaming and some psychiatric conditions that involve an abnormal dissociation of consciousness while awake, such as psychosis, depersonalisation and pseudoseizures." - Silvio Scarone, from the Università degli Studi di Milano in Milan, Italy.

▪ the previously discredited idea of treating some conditions with dream therapy has attracted interest from clinicians.
⁃ example is people suffering from nightmares can sometimes be treated by training them to dream lucidly so they can consciously wake up.

"neuroscience investigators could explore how to extend their work to psychiatric
conditions, using approaches from sleep research to interpret data from acute
psychotic and dissociated states of the brain-mind."
▪ The existence of such psychotic conditions may be rooted in the evolutionary role of dreams, where dreaming is thought to have emerged to enable early humans to rehearse responses to the many dangerous events they faced in real life.
▪ the idea that paranoid delusions and other hallucinatory phenomena occur when the dissociative dreaming state involving replay of threatening situations is carried through into wakefulness.
▪ "Exposure to real threatening events supposedly activates the dream system, so that it produces simulations that are realistic rehearsals of threatening events in terms of perception and behaviour,"
▪ may also have a role in the learning process
Contents are added while you are awake and integrated with the automatic program of dream consciousness during sleep
⁃ works with observations that daytime learning is consolidated by night-time sleeping

new finding that WEATHER may not only AFFECT mood, but ALSO COGNITION

"We found that among participants with depression, low exposure to sunlight was associated with a significantly higher predicted probability of cognitive impairment.
This relationship remained significant after adjustment for season.

"This new finding that
WEATHER
may not only affect mood, but also cognition
significant implications for the treatment of depression
, particularly seasonal affective disorder"

"Discovering the environment's impact on cognitive functioning within the context of seasonal disorders may lead not only to
better understanding of the disorders, but also to the

development of targeted interventions
to enhance everyday functioning and quality of life".

Effect of sunlight exposure on cognitive function among depressed and non-depressed participants: a REGARDS cross-sectional study
Shia T Kent, Leslie A McClure, William L Crosson, Donna K Arnett, Virginia G Wadley, Nalini Sathiakumar
Environmental Health 2009, 8:34 (28 July 2009)

BACKGROUND -
Possible physiological causes for the effect of sunlight on mood are through serotonin and melatonin pathways, as well as through cerebral blood flow. Cognitive function involved in these same pathways may potentially be affected by sunlight exposure. We evaluated whether the amount of sunlight exposure (i.e. insolation) affects cognitive function and examined the effect of season on this relationship.

METHODS - We obtained insolation data for residential regions of 16,800 participants from a national cohort study of blacks and whites, aged 45+. Cognitive impairment was assessed using a validated six-item screener questionnaire and depression status was assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Logistic regression was used to find whether same-day or two-week average sunlight exposure was related to cognitive function and whether this relationship differed by depression status.

RESULTS - A dose-response relationship was found between sunlight exposure and cognitive function, and this relationship differed by depression status. Among depressed participants, lower levels of sunlight were associated with impaired cognitive status (odds ratio=2.58; 95% CI 1.43-6.69). While both season and sunlight were correlated with cognitive function, a significant relation remained between each of them and cognitive impairment after controlling for their joint effects.

CONCLUSIONS The study found an association between decreased exposure to sunlight and increased probability of cognitive impairment using a novel data source. We are the first to examine the effects of two-week exposure to sunlight on cognition, as well as the first to look at sunlight's effects on cognition in a large cohort study.

Buckminster Fuller

"For the first time in history it is now possible to take care of everybody at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. Only ten years ago the 'more with less' technology reached the point where this could be done. All humanity now has the option of becoming enduringly successful." - Buckminster Fuller, 1980.

Buckminster Fuller was probably one of the first futurists and global thinkers. He is the one who coined the term "Spaceship Earth"

Fuller devoted much of his life to resolving the gap between the sciences and the humanities, which he believed was preventing society from taking a comprehensive view of the world.

Doing «more with less» was his credo

«With the highest aeronautical engineering facilities of the world redirected from weaponry to livingry production, all humanity would have the option of becoming enduringly successful.» Harnessing the positive potential of new technology for the greater good was a key aspect of Fuller‘s outlook.
Although Fuller believed in utilizing the latest technology, much of his work developed from his inquiry into «how nature builds»
Fuller was committed to the physical exploration and visual presentation of his ideas.
Fuller thought to inspire people with his ideas for an abundant and equitable future - a vision he felt was absolutely attainable.
But he placed the ultimate responsibility for achieving that goal on us all.

«Our beds are empty two-thirds of the time. Our living rooms are empty seven-eights of the time. Our office buildings are empty one-half of the time. It‘s time we gave this some thought.» - Buckminster Fuller (I Seem to be a Verb, 1970)

FAMILY (n.)

DEFINITIONS OF FAMILY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Family, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau:
"A family includes a householder and one or more people living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption. All people in a household who are related to the householder are regarded as members of his or her family. A family household may contain people not related to the householder, but those people are not included as part of the householder’s family in census tabulations. Thus, the number of family households is equal to the number of families, but family households may include more members than do families. A household can contain only one family for purposes of census tabulations. Not all households contain families since a household may comprise a group of unrelated people or one person living alone."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Family, as defined by a 1970s Long Island, New York housing code (upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1974):
"One or more persons related by blood, adoption, or marriage, living and cooking together as a single housekeeping unit, exclusive of household servants. A number of persons but not exceeding two (2) living and cooking together as a single housekeeping unit though not related by blood, adoption, or marriage shall be deemed to constitute a family."

Three Views of "Family," by the U.S. Supreme Court:
1. a traditional “nuclear family” of two parents and their children, and where the parents are presumed to be acting in the best interests of their children. In such a family, there is no need to give the children their own voice – even when parents do such things as institutionalize their children;
2. an extended-kind model of family made up of a community of parents, siblings, grandparents and other relatives which should be recognized as a primary family, even if the blood-ties are not as strong as a nuclear family; and
3. an individualist model where family members are fairly autonomous and that individuality should be respected.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Family, as defined by Statistics Canada:
"[A] now-married couple, a common-law couple or a lone-parent with a child or youth who is under the age of 25 and who does not have his or her own spouse or child living in the household. Now-married couples and common-law couples may or may not have such children and youth living with them. Now-married couples and common-law couples are classified as husband-wife families and the partners in the couple are classified as spouses." (not anymore)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Family, as defined by the Netherlands Cabinet:
"a social unit where one or more children are being cared for and/or brought up."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As long as you're under my roof . . . .
The National Statistical Service of Greece counts all the people who live under the same roof as a family – even if they aren't related.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
House -
Similarly, the Zinacantecos of southern Mexico don't have a word that is equivalent to our concept of family as a parent-child relationship. Instead, their basic social unit is a "house" and that can mean just one or as many as 20 people who live there.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oxford English Dictionary
first defines a family as the servants of a house, or the household. The second definition is everyone who lives in a house or under one head. It isn't until the third definition that it defines family as a "group of persons consisting of the parents and their children, whether actually living together or not."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guo + Jia
The Chinese word for "nation" consists of the combination of two other characters: "guo"country and "jia"family.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't just take a village – it is one –
Up until the mid-1800s, a Japanese family unit was considered those who worked together in a single village.
In 1889, Japanese law defined a family to be based on blood lineage, with a father as head of the household, passing on down to his eldest son. Since the determining factor was paternal blood relations, that included polygamous families: all children who had the same father were considered to be in the same family.

uchi:
The contemporary Japanese term for family, following post-World War II changes in the nation's laws and society. It may refer to a nuclear family of parents and unmarried children, but it can also mean a household as a unit of production or consumption.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Arabic equivalent to American concept of family is: ‘aila.
The root of that word means: “to support.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Family, as described by George Santayana:
"one of nature's masterpieces."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Family, as described by Kayla Moryoussef - to come.
Current information on this working definition suggests that it will be constructed on the basis of LOVE as the basic unit, and Humanity as the ultimate family. The definition will be intended as an example equation using Love as a constant, and Love=Humanity as the solution.
Given that the variables for the equation are profoundly infinite, the purpose of the definition will act as an invitation to participate in collecting as diverse and as many definitions as possible - to the point that the 'known' 'traditional' 'official' definitions implode into oblivion. At which point the universal collection of definitions is reduced back to the original common denominator, so that all that is left to define family is LOVE=FAMILY=HUMANITY.
